Srinagar: Three terrorists have been gunned down by security forces in the Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir. It is reported that an encounter took place between jawans and terrorists in the Kanigam area of the district in the early hours of Thursday. The security forces then cordoned off the area and asked the militants to surrender. But after continuing the open firing, the jawans killed the terrorists. Kashmir Police said in a tweet.
Jammu and Kashmir Police have said that among the terrorists killed are local terrorists of the al-Badr terror outfit. A total of four of them had joined the organization recently. Security forces had received intelligence inputs about their hiding in the Kanigam area late on Wednesday night after which the entire area was cordoned off. The police and security forces tried hard to persuade the terrorists to surrender, but they refused.
In another tweet, police said, the terrorists rejected the surrender proposal and opened indiscriminate fire on the Jawans, and attacked the Joint Search Party with a grenade. Three terrorists were then gunned down. One of the terrorists surrendered. In Shopian, several people have died this month in encounters between terrorists and security forces. Three weeks ago also, an unidentified terrorist was killed in an encounter at Hadipura in Shopian.
