NEW DELHI: Several VVIPs arrived to pay their respects to India's first Chief of Defence Staff, General Bipin Rawat, at his home on Kumarasami Kamraj Marg in New Delhi, amid high security. Security was strengthened in and around General Rawat's home, with only a few individuals allowed access.

General Rawat (63), his wife Madhulika Rawat, and 11 others were killed earlier on Wednesday when the IAF chopper they were traveling in crashed in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu.

On Wednesday evening, Indian Army Chief M.M. Naravane paid a visit to General Rawat's home after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Admiral R. Hari Kumar, the chief of the Navy, also visited with the bereaved family to express his sympathies for the terrible tragedy.

For four generations, Rawat's family has served in the Indian Army. His father, Lieutenant-General Laxman Singh Rawat, had previously served in the Indian Army. Madhulika, his wife, served as President of the Army Wives' Welfare Association (AWWA). The AWWA is one of the greatest non-governmental organizations dedicated to the welfare of Army wives, children, and dependents.
