Sensex falls 383 Points, Nifty below 17,100 amid Ukraine Crisis

The Indian market indices fell for the sixth straight session on Monday, owing to a sell-off across all sectors. Following Russian President Vladimir Putin's recognition of two breakaway areas in eastern Ukraine, investors became wary, raising fears of a big conflict.

The benchmark BSE Sensex fell 383 points, or 0.66 percent, to 57,301, while the broader NSE Nifty down 114 points, or 0.67 percent, to 17,092.Mid- and small-cap stocks ended the day in the red, with the Nifty Midcap 100 index down 1.02 percent and small-cap stocks falling 2.05 percent.

The National Stock Exchange's 15 sector indices all ended the day in the red. The Nifty PSU and Nifty Metal indexes underperformed the index by 1.48 and 1.11 percent, respectively.

Tata Steel was the worst performer on the Nifty, falling 4.05 percent to Rs 1,134. The laggards included BPCL, TCS, SBI Life, and Tata Motors. The Nifty Realty index took the biggest blow, falling 3 percent, followed by the Nifty Pharma, IT, Metal, and Bank indexes, which all fell between 1 percent and 1.5 percent.
