Sensex gains 1,329-pts, snapping a 7-day losing streak; Nifty rises to 16650

On the Week ended Friday, equities made a strong rebound on the stock exchanges, as investors rushed to bargain buy at lower levels. Following a nearly 5 percent drop yesterday, benchmark indices today  rose 2.4 percent on widespread buying. The volatility index dropped 16.4 percent to 26.7.

At closing, The BSE Sensex finished 1,329 points higher at 55,858.5 in a range-bound trade, with Tata Steel, IndusInd Bank, Bajaj Finance, NTPC, Tech M, Axis Bank, Kotak Bank, and TCS among the index's top gainers. The stocks rose by 3.5 percent to 6.5 percent.  The NSE's 50-share index finished the day at 16,658 points, up 410 points. The index's only losers were Britannia, Nestle India, and HUL, which fell 0.5 percent, 0.2 percent, and 0.01 percent, respectively. In the broader markets, the BSE's MidCap and Smallcap indices outpaced the benchmarks, closing a little more than 4 percent higher apiece.

The Nifty Realty and PSB indices, both of which gained 5 percent on the NSE today, had the greatest bounce. The Nifty Private Bank index (4 percent), the Nifty Bank index (3.5 percent), and the Nifty Pharma, Auto, and Financial Services indices all followed (3 per cent each).
