Sensex, Nifty close flat in a volatile session

Benchmark indices extended their decline into the third day on Tuesday with the BSE Sensex closing 31 points lower at 50,364 levels, while the Nifty down by 19 points at 14,910

Dr Reddy's Labs, Hindustan Unilever,  HCL Tech, ITC, Bharti Airtel, and UltraTech Cement were the top index gainers today while Cipla, Tata Steel, ICICI Bank, SBI, BPCL, Shreeram Cement, Axis and Divis Labs ended the day in the red.

Among key sectoral indices, the Nifty Bank, PSU Bank, Private Bank and Metal indices skid up to 1.3 percent on the NSE. On the upside, the Nifty IT and FMCG indices closed 1 per cent higher each.

The Metal index also was among the top losers ending 0.8 percent lower. The Nifty I.T. index ended with gains of 1.3 percent while the FMCG index rose 0.9 percent by the close of trade. Banking stocks were the biggest laggards in today's session. The Nifty Bank declined 1 percent while the PSU Bank index fell 1.3 percent.

Broader markets outperformed in today's session. The Nifty Midcap index rose 0.4 percent while the Smallcap index ended with gains of 0.3 percent.

The India Volatility Index fell to its lowest in over two months, ending 4.2 percent lower at 20.19. 1,009 stocks on the NSE posted losses while 884 stocks reported gains.
