Sensex, Nifty End Lower For Fifth Day; Nifty Bank Outperforms

Indian stock indices closed on a bearish note for the fifth consecutive day, with Nifty falling 1 percent lower on Thursday

Sensex settles at 46,874.36 down 535.57 points. Nifty 50 closes at 13,817.55 below 149.95 points. Except for Nifty Bank, all other sectoral indices ended lower. Hindustan Unilever (down 3.6pc), Maruti Suzuki (3.4pc), HCL Tech (2pc), and Bajaj Finserv (2pc) were the top losers on the Sensex today while gains in Axis Bank (5.5pc), SBI (2.7pc), and ICICI Bank (1.3pc) trimmed losses.

Indian rupee too closed 12 paise lower at 73.04 against the US dollar on Thursday, amid selling seen in domestic equities.

Among the sectoral indices, the Nifty Bank recovered over 700 points from the day's low of 29,687 to end above the mark of 30,000. The index ended 0.2 percent higher at 30,358. The recovery was led by Axis Bank, State Bank of India and ICICI Bank. HDFC Bank also ended off the day's low but was among the top laggards on the index.

The Nifty I.T. index was the top sectoral loser in today's session along with the Nifty Realty index, both ending 2.2 percent lower while the FMCG index declined 1.9 percent. The PSU Bank index fell 1.8 percent while the Auto index saw cuts of 1 percent in today's session.

Broader markets ended lower but the losses were modest as compared to the benchmark indices. The Nifty Midcap index fell 0.6 percent while the Smallcap index posted losses of 0.7 percent.
