Bomb blast on Afghanistan's Independence Day, hundreds killed, several injured

KABUL: Serial bomb blasts took place at several public places in Jalalabad city of Nangarahar province on Afghanistan's Independence Day. According to local media reports, 66 people were injured in the serial blasts. Earlier on Sunday, a bomb exploded in a wedding hall in Afghanistan's capital Kabul. At least 63 people were killed in the attack, while 180 were reported injured.

Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman Nasrat Rahi mi said that another 180 people were injured in Saturday night's fidayeen bombing. The Islamic group (IS) claimed responsibility for the suicide attack. Due to Sunday's incident, the Afghan government has postponed celebrations to mark the country's 100th Independence Day, which was scheduled to be held on Monday at the historic Dar-ul-Aman Palace.

According to Khama Press, Presidential Spokesperson Sedik said that the secretariat has postponed the holding of Afghanistan's 100th independence celebrations at the behest of President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani. The President has taken this decision to express his condolences to the families of those killed in the Kabul blast. Sedik further said that the President will deliver a speech to pay homage to the martyrs of Independence on the occasion of The 100th Independence Day of Afghanistan and lay a wreath at the Independence Tower.
