New Delhi: Serum Institute of India (SII) CEO Adar Poonawala said India may face vaccine shortage for the next few months. He further said that the capacity to manufacture 10 crore vaccines is not going to increase before July. Tell me, 6 to 7 crore vaccines are also being produced.

In an interview, he said he had not expanded the capacity earlier due to lack of orders. Due to this, the vaccine shortage crisis will continue till July. He added, "There was no order. We didn't think we needed to make more than 100 crore doses a year". He also said that the authorities did not expect a second wave in January. He further added, "Everyone was really feeling that the epidemic in India was about to end. Last month, the Central Government made an advance payment of Rs 3,000 crore to SII to facilitate capacity expansion. New cases crossed 400,000 for the first time in India on Friday".

State that serum institute, the world's largest vaccine maker, manufactures the Oxford-Astrazeneca vaccine, which is locally distributed under the name Covichild brand. The Central Government has so far purchased its entire production, but earlier this month states and private hospitals have also been allowed to buy the vaccine.
