Sexual assault case: Not afraid of any probe, says Oommen Chandy

Thiruvananthapuram: Former Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy has said the left democratic front government's decision recommending a CBI probe into sexual exploitation cases against him and four other Congress leaders would only backfire on it and asserted he was not afraid any inquiry.

Months ahead of assembly elections, the Pinaryi Vijayan government in a surprise move on Saturday sought an investigatoin by the central agency into cases filed on complaints of sexual exploitation by a woman prime accused in the solar scam made in 2013 against Chandy,K C Venugopal, Hibi Eden, Adoor Prakash, all MPs, and former minister and MLA A P Anil Kumar. Besides, the case against BJP leader A P Abdulla Kutty, who was then in the Congress and booked on the same charge, would also be handed over to CBI.

The govt has issued a gazette notification on last weekend recommending CBI probe into the six cases registered over the past few years on a July, 2013 complaint by the woman accused in the multi-crore solar panel scam that she was sexually exploited by them in 2012. "I have not done any wrong. I am not afraid of CBI investigation or any other probe... and will cooperate with any probe", 77-year-old Chandy, recently appointed by the AICC to head the 10-member election committee of the Congress for the coming state assembly polls, told reporters here.

The decision would backfire on the ruling front as it had failed to "even lift a little finger" in the case during the past five years, which indicated its "pathetic failure", he said. The cases against the six, including Chandy, were investigated by the Crime Branch police and the complainant had recently written to Vijayan, seeking a CBI probe, saying the police investigation had limitations.
