The father of actors Sunny Kaushal and Vicky Kaushal, action director Sham Kaushal, recently revealed that he had a cancer diagnosis 20 years ago and had only barely time to live. Sham said that after receiving the diagnosis, he not only recovered but also entered the finest period of his life.

In 2003, Shan received a stomach cancer diagnosis. After coming back after filming in Ladakh for Farhan Akhtar's Lakshya, he found about it. He claimed it began with "a lot of complications in his stomach," for which he needed to be hospitalized to Mumbai's Nanavati Hospital. Before physicians informed him that he wouldn't live, he had a little operation and biopsy. Sham Kaushal won't survive, the doctors warned him.

Sham remembered that Vicky and Sunny, his kids, were teens at the time. Sunny was almost fourteen, Vicky was approximately fifteen.  “I accepted that fact that I won’t survive, so I prayed to God that I am not unhappy, I am 48. I started from nothing and I have achieved a lot. You take me away but if you are going to save me, then don’t make me a weak person. I can’t live like a weak person,” he said.

Sham remembers how all of his concerns vanished as soon as he prayed. After a few procedures and 50 days in the hospital, he was released, and he ultimately made a complete recovery.  “After they said I won’t survive, I saw the best days of my life. I won all the awards after 2003. My best films came after that. My kids became successful after that,” he shared.

In the late 1970s, Sham Kaushal started his career as a stunt performer. He mostly assisted Veeru Devgan, one of the era's most well-liked action directors. Sham has directed action scenes in movies including Tiger Lives (2017), Simmba (2018), Padmaavat (2018), Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2018), and Gangs of Wasseypur (2012).
