Denis Shapovalov breached the code in the first round of the Italian Open tennis but has managed to beat Lorenzo Sonego 7-6, 3-6, 6-3. In the second set, he jumped over the net to show the side of the opposing player on the red claycourt to the chair umpire, which is being called conduct contrary to the spirit of the game.
The umpire has already ruled Shapovalov's serve out, giving Sonego a break point on his double fault. Shapovalov has lost that set. He, however, later apologised to the umpire for his conduct. He is now going to face Georgia's Nikoloz Basilashvili, who has defeated Daniel Evans 7-6, 6-2. Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka defeated Reilly Opelka 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. Dominic Thiem was defeated 6-4, 7-6 by Italy's Fabio Fognini.
Now he is going to face compatriot Jannik Siner. In the women's section, 2020 champion Simona Halep defeated Elize Cornet 6-4, 6-4 while Victoria Azarenka defeated Victoria Golubic 6-3, 6-0. Coco Gow defeated Angelique Kerber 6-1, 6-4. Ukraine's Anhelina Kalinina defeated Madison Key 6-4, 6-4.
