Sharad Purnima, known as Ashwin Purnima, is a cherished annual observance that falls in October, and this year's festivities are set to unfold on October 28, 2023. On this auspicious occasion, families unite to pay homage to Goddess Lakshmi, seeking her blessings for prosperity and overall well-being. Traditional rituals include prayers to the Moon, signifying the advent of the Sharad Ritu or winter season.

Historical Significance

Sharad Purnima brings families together to venerate Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and fortune. Homes are beautifully adorned with colorful decorations, and elaborate ceremonies and offerings are presented to honor the goddess.

According to Hindu mythology, Sharad Purnima is the night when Lord Krishna performed the Maha-Raas, a divine dance. It is customary for devotees to take a purifying dip in the Yamuna River in Mathura and offer prayers to the divine couple. Legend has it that on this very night, captivated by the enchanting melody of Lord Krishna's flute, the gopis (cowherd girls) left their homes and families to join the Lord in an all-night dance of devotion and love.

Date and Time

As per Drik Panchang, Sharad Purnima is scheduled for October 28. The Purnima Tithi will commence at 4:17 AM on October 28 and conclude at 1:53 AM on October 29.

Rituals and Traditions

A customary practice during Sharad Purnima involves placing a bowl of kheer (rice pudding) under the moonlight, especially during the auspicious midnight hour. The person who stays awake and keeps vigil throughout the night is known as a "Kojagara."

In a unique astronomical alignment, October will witness its second eclipse on October 28, just 14 days after the Solar eclipse on October 14. This time, a Lunar eclipse, or Chandra Grahan, will grace the night sky. Indians are poised to witness this phenomenal celestial event as the Lunar Eclipse is set to occur on Saturday.

On this day, devotees will engage in both celestial and earthly observances, ensuring that Sharad Purnima remains a significant and spiritually enriching occasion.
