Mumbai: The stock market closed today on monday, the first trading day of the week. The BSE's main index sensex slipped 540 points to close at 40145.50 after a weakness of some big shares such as Reliance Industries, ICICI Bank and Tata Steel.

The nifty at the National Stock Exchange fell 1.36 per cent (162.60 points) to close at 11767.75. According to the pundits, further market fluctuations will continue. Therefore, investors should take precautions. During the day, the major of Shanghai and Tokyo were doing business with a decline. The domestic stock market moves are expected to be determined by the quarterly results and global developments of the companies to be presented this week.

Analysts have predicted that investors will be looking at the process of presidential elections in the US. The expiry of various derivatives contracts this week may see a turmoil in the market.   If it comes to the rupee, the rupee declined by 23 paise on Monday against the US dollar amid softening in the domestic stock market.
