New Delhi: Veteran Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Wednesday said he had been prosecuted by the court in the death case of his wife Sunanda Pushkar, though he faced baseless allegations. A Delhi court on Wednesday acquitted Tharoor of charges in connection with the death of his wife Sunanda Pushkar at a hotel here.

Special Judge Gitanjali Goel has pronounced the order while hearing it online. Tharoor thanked the judge for having spent the last seven and a half years in 'torture' and the decision brought "great relief." After the verdict, Tharoor issued a statement saying, "I want to thank Justice Gitanjali Goel Ji for this decision. The decision culminated in a nightmare that I had to go through after the death of my wife Sunanda Pushkar.''

According to Tharoor, 'I had to face many baseless allegations and also a bad name from the media, but I had full faith in the judiciary. My stand has been confirmed today. In our judicial system, the process itself often becomes a punishment.' However, the fact is that justice has happened and our entire family will pray for the peace of Sunanda's soul.
