New Delhi: Veteran Congress leader and Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor has cited the cancellation of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's visit to India, saying why not cancel the Republic Day celebrations this time in the event of not being the chief guest? Shashi Tharoor tweeted from his official Twitter handle, writing, "Now that this month Boris Johnson's visit to India has been canceled due to the second wave of covid and we do not have a chief guest on Republic Day, so Why not go one step further and cancel the celebration altogether? ''

Former Union Minister and Lok Sabha MP Shashi Tharoor also said that calling people for the parade this time would be 'irresponsible'. Significantly, the British PM Boris Johnson has canceled his scheduled visit to India on Republic Day celebrations on 26 January due to the escalation of the crisis caused by the new strain of coronavirus in his country.

The officials have said that PM Boris Johnson on Tuesday spoke to PM Narendra Modi and expressed regret for canceling his tour. The British PM Boris Johnson was invited by the Government of India as the Chief Guest for the Republic Day Parade on 26 January.
