NEW DELHI:: The micro-blogging site Twitter has told a parliamentary panel that follows strict data safety standards and most of the employees do not have access to user data. Twitter employees were asked questions by the parliamentary panel led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Friday.
Sources said that the members asked about former employee Peiter Zatko's allegation and it clarified that the government did not force them to recruit their people in the company.
Twitter also denied any data leak by the company. The panel had summoned Twitter and IRCTC over data privacy.
The purpose of the action, according to the Lok Sabha, was "to hear the representatives of Twitter India's opinions on the subject of citizens' data protection and privacy." The committee will hear opinions from individuals, stakeholders, and experts on matters connected to Gig economy, digital platforms, technology, and the privacy and security of citizen data.
A briefing on the subject from IRCTC representatives has also been requested. The IRCTC has around 10 crore subscribers, and sources claim that it aims to monetize this data.
The Personal Data Protection (PDP) Bill, 2019, was dropped by the union government, which is run by Information and Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, on August 3, 2022. A comprehensive Bill for modern digital privacy regulations will replace this long-awaited legislation.
The Tharoor-led panel has spoken with various stakeholders , including IT businesses, social media companies, ministries, and other regulators. It is anticipated that the panel's report will be completed before the committee's mandate expires on August 30, 2022.
