New Delhi: The coming ICC ODI World Cup 2023 should not feature the opening combo of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, according to former Indian cricket team head coach Ravi Shastri. India is preparing for the competition in the hopes of ending their lengthy wait for an ICC crown.

Shastri has noted a distinction between the current Indian team's makeup and those of earlier successful squads.

In the 50-over format, India last saw triumph in 2011 while MS Dhoni served as captain. Shastri, who has closely monitored and advised the team, thinks that the management of the team will not choose the opening combination of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill in the World Cup.

In place of the injured KL Rahul, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill have been India's favoured opening partnership in ODIs. Shastri contends that the lack of a left-handed batsman makes it unlikely for this pair to be accepted for the World Cup. Shastri highlighted the value of a balanced lineup and the potential influence of a left-handed batsman in the top three or four positions in an interview with The Week.

Shastri highlighted the importance of left-handers in earlier World Cup victories. Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, and Suresh Raina, all left-handers, all played significant roles in the 2011 World Cup victory. Shastri cited prior instances like the triumphant squads of 1974, 1979, 1987, and 1996 as well as the dominance of left-handers in Australia's lineup. In order for the team to succeed, he emphasised the importance of creating a mix and balance.
