Amritsar: Sukhbir Singh Badal, president of BJP's ally Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), has also demanded inclusion of Muslims in the Citizenship Amendment Act. The Akali Dal is included in the ruling NDA government at the center. The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Saturday demanded the Central Government to change the new citizenship law to include Muslims, saying no one should be excluded on the basis of religion.

Significantly, the disputed Amended Citizenship Act provides for Indian citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, Parsis, and Jains who came to India due to religious persecution from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan till 31 December 2014. Responding to questions from the press, SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal said, "We firmly believe that the Muslim community should also be included in the Citizenship Amendment Act."

He further said, "I am speaking on behalf of my party and the party clearly believes that the Government of India should amend this Act to include Muslims as it is the opinion of the country." Ferozepur, who is also an MP, has said that his party MPs had said in Parliament that Muslims should be included in the amended Citizenship Act.
