Renaming Khel Ratna award, not people's wish but 'political game': Shiv Sena

Mumbai: Shiv Sena has targeted the Central government over the renaming of the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award. Shiv Sena has recently criticized it in its mouthpiece Saamna. In fact, Saamna says, "Neeraj Chopra won the country's first gold medal in the javelin throw during the enthusiastic discussion on other sports in the country due to Tokyo Olympics. It was during this golden moment that the Central Government played a political game. Many have been saddened by this political game. The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award has been renamed as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.''

At the same time, further Saamna reads, "Today, the Modi government has named the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award as major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. This does not mean that the previous governments had forgotten Dhyan Chand. Dhyan Chand was awarded the third-highest civilian award 'Padma Bhushan' in 1956. The great player died in Delhi on December 3, 1979. Dhyan Chand's birthday is celebrated as 'National Sports Day'. National Awards are also given in the name of Dhyan Chand. Major Dhyan Chand and his contribution to the field of sports are huge. He was a good man and had a close relationship with Pandit Nehru. Therefore, it cannot be assumed that it is a great pride for Dhyan Chand to erase the name of Rajiv Gandhi, who made the supreme sacrifice for the country and name Major Dhyan Chand there.''

At the same time, the only purpose of renaming the award in Saamna is the politics of hatred. In fact, Saamna says, "An even bigger award could have been instituted to honor Major Dhyan Chand. But by not doing so, a political game has been played by renaming a 1992 award." Further, it is written in the face, now BJP political players are saying, 'Did Rajiv Gandhi ever hold a hockey stick in his hand?'

His question is valid, but 'if he renamed the Sardar Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad after Narendra Modi, did Mr. Modi do such a thing in cricket? Or named the Stadium in Delhi after Arun Jaitley. The same standard can be set there also. People are asking such questions. The administration of sports like cricket, football has gone into the hands of non-players today, what should it be considered a sign of?'
