New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Thursday (December 22) upheld the decision to allow Sikhs to carry Kirpan in aircraft during air travel in India. The court has dismissed a PIL challenging the notification issued to allow Sikh passengers to carry Kirpan in aircraft. Challenging the permission to carry the Kirpan, petitioner Harsh Vibhor Singhal had told the court that the government had neither used its discretion nor security to decide whether to allow Sikh passengers to carry the Kirpan in the aircraft.

Let us tell you that, the bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramaniam Prasad of the High Court had reserved its decision on the petition after hearing all the parties last week. The petition challenged the notification dated March 4, 2022, by the central government, under which Sikh passengers have been allowed to keep Kirpan in domestic flights. The court said there was no need to interfere with the government's notification. Through this notification, the government said that Sikh passengers would be allowed to carry Kirpans on all domestic flights in India. But the blade of the saber should not exceed 6 inches and the total length should not exceed 9 inches.

The Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee has welcomed the decision of the High Court. The PIL filed demanding a ban on Kirpan has been rejected. Committee's General Secretary Jagdeep Singh Kahlon has informed that as soon as the Gurdwara Committee came to know that a PIL has been filed to ban Kirpan in the aircraft, the committee decided to lobby strongly against it.
