Hyderabad: It is the first time, that simultaneous pancreas and kidney transplantation surgery on a 27-year old patient was performed by the doctors at Osmania General Hospital (OGH) on wednesday night successfully.
23 hours lasting surgery performed on S Ganesh, a Type 1 diabetes patient and resident of Atmakur mandal in Nalgonda district.
Dr Ch Madhusudhan , head, surgical gastroenterology department, OGH, said, "He needed a pancreas transplantation as it had stopped producing insulin, leading to high blood sugar level. Before the surgery, the patient's blood sugar was at a high 600 mg/dl. He needed 60 units of insulin every day to survive".
The blood sugar level of Ganesh has come down to 135 mg/dl, before the transplant and the patient does not require any insulin dose now.
