Bhartiya Janta Party candidate from Amethi, Smriti Irani, on Monday shared a video on Twitter and accused Congress president Rahul Gandhi of "booth capturing" in his home constituency of Amethi during the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections 2019. According to a tweet Irani shared, an old woman wanted to vote for BJP but was forcefully made to press the button against the Congress symbol. The incident took place in Gauriganj in Uttar Pradesh. The area is a part of Amethi constituency, where Irani is contesting against Congress president Rahul Gandhi in a closely watched battle.

In the video, the woman claimed the presiding officer of the particular booth forcibly grabbed her hand and put in on the Congress's Hand symbol. The woman said she wanted to vote for the BJP (Lotus symbol) but was not allowed. After alerting the EC about the misconduct, Smriti Irani said, "I tweeted an alert to administration and EC (alleging booth capturing in Amethi), hope they take action. People of the country have to decide whether this kind of politics of Rahul Gandhi should be punished or not."

Earlier, Smriti Irani targetted Rahul Gandhi and claimed that he was 'missing' from Amethi as he was not concerned about its voters. On Sunday, she blamed Gandhi for the death of a man in an Amethi hospital. "Rahul Gandhi's hand is drenched in the blood of an innocent man who just wanted to get himself treated at the hospital whose trustee is Rahul Gandhi. He only wanted the hospital to treat him free, however, he was denied treatment as he was carrying Ayushaman health card given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi government," said Irani.
