Siddharth Soni is the founder and President of the Non Profit Organization, Siddham Sansthan. He belongs to the city of Udaipur and identifies as a social worker and activist. Siddharth has performed extraordinary social service by extending help to numerous village and slum children in rural and Government schools situated in and around the city of Udaipur in Rajasthan. His team consists of young college going students who actively work towards the welfare and education of village children who are underprivileged.

We sat down with Siddharth to ask him a couple of questions about his line of work and what he feels about it.

How did Siddham really start? What was the key motivation behind it?

In 2016, I along with a few college friends went for a trip around Udaipur. We reached the Dheekli village and found that the situation of children in its Government school was extremely alarming. It was the winter season and while we were wrapped in turtlenecks and jackets, these children didn't even have proper cotton t-shirts to cover them. It was this moment that we decided to pitch in our pocket money and buy warm clothes, socks and shoes for these children. Eventually, we started raising bigger funds through crowdfunding and awareness campaigns. I then decided to register our team as a Non Profit Organization.

Is your work limited to providing for the children's uniforms and stationery?

Although we started out by distributing clothes, shoes, uniforms and stationery, we now involve ourselves in the routine problems of the school going children. There are issues with the quality of mid-day meals and we take such matters to the school administration for a quick solution. These children don't really have anyone to speak on their behalf and that's why we try to give them an adequate representation.

In times like these, with the economy facing various repercussions of the pandemic, do you feel that the importance of social service and activism has increased?

Absolutely. Social service becomes doubly important now because a lot of people depend on it. I feel that if you have resources to help someone, you definitely should. More and more organizations are coming up to act as change makers in the society. Social activism and social work are much needed tools to uplift the society. Fortunately, a lot of times the Government takes notice of such initiatives and gives due support to them.
