New Delhi: Congress MPs from the state held a meeting with party interim president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday ahead of the proposed assembly elections in Panjab and discussed the current political situation. During the meeting, MPs discussed a number of issues including bomb blasts in Ludhiana district court and recent mob lynching incidents. Sonia Gandhi sought MPs' views on the party's prospects in Punjab elections.
According to media reports, sources said MPs in the meeting have criticised Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi and the Home Minister for not condemning the lynching incidents. The MPs highlighted the history of militancy in the state and stressed the need to maintain communal peace. Sources said Parneet Kaur, wife of former Punjab CM Amarinder Singh and Congress MP from Patiala, did not attend the meeting.
The meeting dominated the law and order and security issues, as well as brainstormed on the challenges of the government and the Congress' vision in the upcoming assembly elections. An MP present at the meeting told the media that 'the leaders suggested that coordination between the government and the party needs to be improved as the government has suffered due to the statements of party state president Navjot Singh Sidhu at times.'
