New Delhi: Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi wrote a letter to PM Modi on Friday requesting to ensure reservation for OBC candidates in medical colleges in states and union territories. In the letter, Sonia has said that the benefit given to the Other Backward Classes (OBC) under the All India Quota in admission through the National Eligibility and Entrance Test (NEET) is limited to central institutions only.

In support of Sonia Gandhi's letter, former Congress National President and her son Rahul Gandhi wrote, 'Positive action is necessary for social justice'. Sonia has said in her letter that under the All India Quota all central and state medical educational institutions reserve 15, 7.5, and 10% seats for SC, ST, and OBC respectively. However, according to data collected by the All India Federation for Other Backward Classes, reservation for OBC students under the All India Quota is limited to central institutions only.

Since 2017, OBC students have lost more than 11,000 seats due to non-implementation of OBC reservation in medical educational institutions in states and union territories. This stance of colleges is a violation of the 93rd Constitutional Amendment and this leaves deserving OBC students from receiving medical education.
