After finishing her studies, Sonu Walia decided to go into modeling. Sonu became famous in the modeling world. After this, Sonu took part in the Miss India Competition and managed to win the crown of the year 1985. Sonu started getting offers from Bollywood as well. Sonu Walia became famous for the film Khoon Bhari Maang. Although the actress has played small role in the film but she has managed to grab eyeballs by her role. The film was released in the year 1988. In the film Rekha played the lead role. She also got the Best Supporting Actress Filmfare Award.

Even after searching for work she failed to get it. As a result she started doing bold roles in the film. The actress gave bold scenes in the film Akarshan released in the year 1988. After working for some years she made up her mind to leave the industry and get married. She married NRI Surya Prakash and settled down. After the death of her first husband Surya Prakash, she married second NRI film producer Pratap Singh.
