Sony Group Corp is rumoured to be planning a move into the field of electric mobility with what may be the company's first commercial vehicle. While it is unsurprising that the advent of battery power has piqued the interest of various IT businesses across the world, it is also probably predictable that Sony wants a piece of the lucrative pie.

Kenichiro Yoshida, Sony's CEO, announced the company's potential push into the field of electric cars at the company's keynote talk at CES 2022 on Tuesday. At a press briefing, he allegedly stated, "We are studying the commercial introduction of Sony EV." "As a creative entertainment firm, Sony is well-positioned to revolutionise mobility."

Sony had shown off its Vision-S idea in 2020 to a lot of surprise and enthusiasm. However, according to various accounts, the Vision-S was more of a presentation of what Sony can do in terms of automotive technology than a solid promise to enter the realm of mobility.

During a Sony media event for CES 2022, Kenichiro Yoshida of Sony Group Corporation talks while the Sony Vision-S 01 vehicle is on show. The Sony Vision-S was also seen on test runs on public roads shortly after the global unveiling. According to reports, the electric vehicle has up to 40 sensors to improve autonomous driving capabilities. The EV includes a 360-degree audio system, can get updates over the air (OTA), supports 5G, and has a massive infotainment screen, according to the company.

In terms of design, the Vision-S has some similarity to Porsche's style. The concept car is said to have a 536hp dual-motor all-wheel drive system, can achieve 100 kmph in under five seconds, and has a peak speed of 240 kmph, according to rumours. Sony showed out an electric SUV prototype at CES 2022 on Tuesday, but provided no specifics about the car or whether it is the company's first electric vehicle.

During a Sony media event for CES 2022, the Vision-S 02 (L), an SUV prototype car, and the Vision-S 01 sedan concept (R) are on exhibit. (AFP)There's also no word on the first-ever Sony EV's manufacturing and delivery schedules. However, Yoshida's revelation boosted Sony's stock by 4.7 percent in Tokyo the next day.

As the competition for electric vehicles heats up, Sony looks to be following in the footsteps of numerous other major corporations. Apple is one of them, with Project Titan said to be working on an electric vehicle. Xiaomi and Foxconn are two other names that come to mind.

The presence of internet businesses might intensify the rivalry at a time when established auto makers are trying to close the gap on Tesla in the EV industry.
