Former India captain and current BCCI president Sourav Ganguly shared a memorable anecdote recounting his Pakistan tour. Talking about the memorable visit to Pakistan in 2003-04, Ganguly said that the security arrangements were very tight and yet he left the team hotel for a night to enjoy the local cuisine in the neighboring country. India had defeated the Inzamam-ul-Haq-led Pakistani team 3–2 and 2–1 in both ODI and Test series on that tour. Ganguly was not available in the first two Tests but later led the team in the next Test and 3 ODIs. Indian players enjoyed cricket as well as local food on the streets of Pakistan during their 45-day tour.

According to the information, while remembering that tour, Ganguly said, "I was really fed up with the security system. When I went out of the hotel room on the first day, I saw two people standing with AK-47 in front. One was looking towards the door and another was looking at the other. So I went to the manager and told him that we are here for 45 days, you please remove the security from the front of the room and send them to the lobby. Just because we cannot wake up every morning and see someone standing here with an AK-47. What would happen if someone shot accidentally somewhere?"

Tight security from airport to hotel: According to a media report, he told "After coming out of the airport in Karachi, the car was moving towards the hotel. The entire road was closed and it was a good 10 km drive. Every side road leading to the main road was blocked. There were security personnel, military and tigers everywhere who looked in every nook and corner. The hotel where we stayed in Karachi, I think it was on the third floor, so no guests were given the second and fourth floors."
