Johannesburg:  After testing positive for the virus, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is being treated for mild Covid-19 symptoms, according to an official statement released on Monday.

According to reports, the President, who is fully vaccinated, began to feel ill after leaving the State Memorial Service in Cape Town earlier on Sunday in honour of former Deputy President FW de Klerk. The President is in good spirits, but the Military Health Service of the South African National Defence Force is keeping an eye on him, according to the statement.

For the next week, Ramaphosa is in self-imposed exile in Cape Town, delegating all responsibilities to Deputy President David Mabuza. The President recently returned from a trip to four West African countries: Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, and Senegal.

The South African delegation and the President were tested for Covid-19 in all of the nations, according to the Presidency. On his return to Johannesburg on December 8, Ramaphosa also tested negative. The President's illness serves as a reminder to everyone in the country to be vaccinated and stay watchful against infection.
