The Greater Chennai Corporation received more than 1.25 lakh applications looking for the inclusion of names to the voters’ list during the four-day special camp, even as allegations are raised that bogus voters were being enrolled ahead of the Assembly poll. During the special camps on November 21 and 22, and December 12 and 13, 1,25,010 Form-6 applications were received asking the inclusion in the voters’ list. Corporation officials attached to the election department said they have never received such a large number of applications.

Greater Chennai with 16 constituencies, the highest number of applications were received from Perambur (12,545), followed by Virugambakkam (11,225). The Corporation had received less than 14,000 applications between February, when the final voters’ list for the previous year was released, and November, during which the draft electoral roll was released.

However, there is no single Form-6A application, which is for the inclusion of name in the electoral roll by overseas Indian voters. Other 13,317 applications were received for making corrections (Form-8) and 19,056 were received for changing address (Form-8A) in the voters’ list. Also, 4,800 applications were received for deleting the names from the roll. In all, 1,62,183 applications were received at the special camps. After the careful investigation of the applications is completed, the final voters’ list will be released in January or February.
