The ruling BJP has swept the elections in two zilla parishad constituencies in Goa. BJP has won a simple majority in each of the two district panchayats and leaves the opposition Congress party behind. The Congress is still experiencing the effects of losing more than two-thirds of its MLAs to the BJP just a little more than a year ago.

Ruling BJP has won 32 of the 48 seats for which the polls were conducted, winning both the district panchayats at an ease. Seven independent candidates won and the Congress four, the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party three, and the Nationalist Congress Party won one. To be noted, One BJP candidate was elected unopposed. The Aam Aadmi Party AAP has opened its account in Goa for the first time by winning a single seat.

The party claims the victory as a appraisal of the CM Pramod Sawant who faced severe criticism both from within his party as well as from the opposition over the handling of the lockdown, the pandemic as well as for the controversial railway double-tracking project. CM Post sweeping victory tweeted a call to shape glorious and Swayampurna (Self Reliant) Goa.

The state BJP president Sadanand Shet Tanavade said the rural areas have supported the BJP very well. He added the poll results slaps on face of those who criticise the government in spite of the good work. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP state President JP Nadda and many other congratulates Goa BJP and the Chief Minister for the tremendous victory.
