Patna: A 27-year-old specially-abled man, Mohammed Kamar Riyaz, was detained on Saturday, September 30, after allegedly causing disruption and locking himself in a bathroom on an IndiGo flight from Ahmedabad to Patna. The incident occurred on IndiGo flight 6E 126 and led to a complaint by the airline against Riyaz for unruly behavior.
Upon landing at Patna airport, Riyaz was handed over to police officials. Vinod Peter, the Station House Officer (SHO) at Patna Airport, reported that the airlines had filed a complaint against Riyaz for creating a disturbance and behaving inappropriately during the flight. Preliminary investigations, including the examination of medical documents and statements from Riyaz's brother, who was traveling with him, suggested that Riyaz may be suffering from a mental illness. Peter stated, "The passenger, Kamar Riyaz, is mentally disabled and is under treatment. He was carrying medical reports. He was traveling with one of his relatives from Hyderabad to Patna."
The airline crew had reported that Riyaz misbehaved on the flight and locked himself in the onboard restroom. As a result, the SHO confirmed that they detained him based on the airline's complaint, with further verification ongoing. Riyaz, a mechanical engineer residing in West Champaran, Bihar, had been traveling with his brother from Ahmedabad to Patna for medical treatment. At present, Riyaz is receiving treatment at a private hospital in Patna for his mental illness. The police intend to monitor his activities in the coming days.
This incident follows a previous case in July when an unruly passenger allegedly assaulted a senior Air India management official on a flight from Sydney to New Delhi. The airline's Head of Inflight Services Department, Sandeep Verma, was reportedly hit by a passenger during the flight, but no action was taken against the assailant.
