Ladakh to host Khelo India Winter Games, 1700 players expected to participate

Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju announced on Thursday that the Union Territory of Ladakh will host the Khelo India Winter Games earlier this month. Whereas in March such competition will be held in Jammu and Kashmir. Sports Ministry is going to bear the expenses of both the competitions of Khelo India Winter Games. The first competition is to be held in Ladakh in the third week of February and the second competition in Jammu and Kashmir in the first week of March. The Khelo India Ladakh Winter Games will have ice hockey championships, figure skating and speed skating events and this competition will be organized at the block, district and union territory level.

University Games inducted for the first time at Khelo India

Around 1700 players are expected to participate in these games. Khelo India Jammu and Kashmir Winter Games will be in the four age groups for boys and girls in Kongdori, Gulmarg. In these sports, players in the age group of 19 to 21, 17 to 18, 15 to 16 and 13 to 14 will participate in Alpine skiing, cross country skiing, snow boarding and snowshoeing events. Around 841 players and officials from 15 teams of various states and organizations are expected to participate in these games organized by Jammu Kashmir Sports Council and Jammu Kashmir Winter Sports Association. On this occasion, Rijiju said that there is no better option than sports to put the energy of youth in the right place. We have included sports like ice hockey, figure skating, speed skating which are part of the Olympics.

"With time we will be able to prepare champions in these sports. He said that I am happy to announce the commencement of another Khelo India Games. This will be the third Khelo India game in a year and we have planned to organize a competition for indigenous games as well."
