SRILANKA: According to a formal statement released by India's Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe has asked India for assistance in implementing policy changes, governance, capacity building, digitalization, and public service delivery.

On Saturday in the island nation, a delegation from India led by the Director General of the National Centre for Good Governance (NCGG), Bharat Lal, met with the President of Sri Lanka. They spoke about policy reforms, good governance, digitalization, capacity building and training, institution building, and the assurance of the delivery of public services. The President was impressed with how India has overseen social development and ensured strong economic growth.

President Wickremesinghe delivered his vision for Sri Lanka during the meeting, outlining a plan to overcome current economic issues and steer the nation towards rapid economic growth. He also encouraged the NCGG to support the creation of a University of Governance and Public Policy in Sri Lanka.

The NCGG director general praised PM Narendra Modi for his ability to handle a crisis during the riots in Gujarat in 2001.

Gujarat has enjoyed double-digit economic growth over the past 20 years as a result of the Chief Minister's ability to put the state on the path of high economic growth and sustained prosperity after taking office in 2001 amidst a number of crises and negative economic growth.

"Thereafter, since 2014, as Prime Minister, he has introduced a new culture of citizen-centric policies and good governance, and as a result, India is witnessing high economic growth, assured public service delivery, and fast improving quality of life for its citizens.

Sri Lanka is eager to learn from India's policy-driven governance approach and its extensive use of digital technology in the creation, implementation, and oversight of several programmes and initiatives. Top state workers expressed their gratitude for India's ongoing support of Sri Lanka during its recent extraordinary economic crisis during a series of meetings organised by the President's office. "DG underlined the unique relationship India and Sri Lanka enjoy while discussing the Prime Minister's motto of "neighbourhood first," the statement said.
