Sri Lanka Cricket has officially accepted Lahiru Thirimanne's retirement from the realm of international cricket. In an announcement issued on Friday, the country's cricket board confirmed the conclusion of left-handed batsman Lahiru Thirimanne's international career. After debuting on the international stage in January 2010, the 34-year-old Thirimanne formally retired from his international endeavors in July through a social media declaration.

Sri Lanka Cricket's Executive Committee has given its endorsement to Lahiru Thirimanne's decision to step away from participating in all forms of international cricket. His final appearance donning the Sri Lankan jersey took place in March 2022 during the Bengaluru Test against India. Over the course of 44 Test matches, Thirimanne maintained an average of 26.43, achieving three centuries-- two against Bangladesh and one against England. He also secured 10 half-centuries, amassing a total of 2,088 runs.

Thirimanne's journey extended to 127 One Day Internationals (ODIs), where he accumulated 3,194 runs with four centuries and 21 half-centuries, showcasing an average of 34.71. In the realm of T20 Internationals (T20Is), however, his performance faltered, amassing a mere 291 runs across 26 matches at an average of 16.16. Notably, he contributed to Sri Lanka's victory in the 2014 World T20, a triumph that saw his team emerge victorious over India in the final.

Reflecting on his departure from the sport, Thirimanne expressed profound gratitude for his years of representing his nation. He acknowledged the game's significant impact on his life, but he also conveyed his mixed emotions about his decision to retire from international cricket with immediate effect.

Thirimanne revealed that this choice was not made lightly, acknowledging the difficulty of the decision. He alluded to numerous unexpected factors that contributed to his determination to step back from the sport, both voluntarily and involuntarily.
