Sri Lanka is taking steps to upgrade its Meteorological Department to better deal with the nation's weather-related challenges. State Defence Minister Premitha Bandara Tennakoon revealed that the government has initiated efforts to modernize the department's outdated technology, which lags about 25 years behind current standards.

Tennakoon informed Parliament about the ongoing modernization process, which is being funded partly by the World Bank. He emphasized the need for the recruitment of an expert well-versed in the latest advancements in meteorological technology to drive this transformation.

Highlighting the impact of monsoon winds that carry polluted air into Sri Lanka and the adverse weather conditions experienced in Colombo during certain months, Tennakoon stressed the necessity for the country to revamp its Meteorological Department to effectively tackle these challenges.

The move comes as the government recognizes the crucial role of updated technology and expertise in predicting and managing weather patterns, especially in the face of increasingly unpredictable climatic conditions.
