COLOMBO: Sri Lanka's government has sent a delegation to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for discussions on how to obtain loans from the lender.

On Sunday, a delegation led by Finance Minister Ali Sabry, including Central Bank Governor Nandalal Weerasinghe were sent. In the next days, the delegation will pay a visit to the  headquarters of  International Monetary Fund  to undertake negotiations.

According to reports, Sabry informed that if the discussions go well, they anticipate to get around USD 4 billion from the IMF in five tranches.

Sri Lanka is in the midst of a severe economic crisis, with foreign reserves of less than USD 2 billion.

Sri Lanka's Finance Ministry announced on Tuesday that the government has chosen to halt normal debt servicing for all related debts for the time being until it can put together an orderly and consensual restructuring plan with the IMF's help.
