Chennai: On Friday, the Sri Lankan Navy arrested 33 Indian fishermen, accusing them of crossing the international maritime border between India and Sri Lanka. The fishermen, who had set out from Pamban North Fishing Port four days earlier, were reportedly fishing near Southern Mannar when they were apprehended by the Sri Lankan Navy.

In addition to arresting the fishermen, the Sri Lankan Navy seized four boats belonging to individuals named Charles, Susai, Ranjan, and Alex. The arrested fishermen were taken to the Kalpatti Navy Camp. After an initial inquiry, they are expected to be handed over to the Fisheries Department authorities in Puthalam.

This incident follows another recent arrest, where 22 fishermen were detained by the Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly crossing the maritime border. The fishermen's association of Tharuvaikulam reported that the latest arrests occurred while the fishermen were working in the deep waters between India and Sri Lanka. They also noted that two of their mechanized boats were seized.

Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai has taken note of the situation and, along with representatives from the fishermen's community, met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Following the meeting, Jaishankar assured that necessary measures would be taken to address the issue.
