Sri Lankan Navy Arrests 37 Indian Fishermen and Seizes Boats

Chennai: In two separate incidents, the Sri Lankan Navy apprehended a total of 37 Indian fishermen and confiscated their five fishing boats. The arrests came amidst heightened patrolling efforts by the Sri Lankan Navy, following reports of an alleged Chinese Navy spy ship anchoring in Sri Lankan waters.

Incident 1: 23 Indian Fishermen Arrested near Thalaimannar
Multiple teams of the Sri Lankan Navy encircled 23 Indian fishermen from Rameswaram who were engaged in fishing near Thalaimannar. The fishermen were detained, and three of their boats were seized by the Sri Lankan Navy. Subsequently, they were taken to the Thalaimannar Navy Camp.

Incident 2: 14 Fishermen Apprehended near Neduntheevu
In another incident, 14 Indian fishermen were arrested near Neduntheevu, and two of their fishing boats were confiscated. The apprehended fishermen were transported to the Mayilatti camp.

Since October 14, the Sri Lankan Navy has arrested a total of 64 Indian fishermen and seized 10 fishing boats in separate incidents.

MK Stalin Advocates for Detained Fishermen
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin addressed the issue of 12 Indian fishermen and their fishing boats detained by the Maldives Coast Guard. In his letter to Union Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar, he pointed out that the fishermen had been detained on October 23, even though they had embarked on their fishing journey on October 1 from Thoothukudi district. Stalin urged Jaishankar to take up the matter with Maldives authorities to secure the release of the detained fishermen and their boats.
