Sri Lankan Prime Minister meets IMF official on economic instability

COLOMBO: Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe spoke with Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), on the country's economic crisis,  the prime minister's office said in a statement on Wednesday.

Sri Lanka has chosen to seek International Monetary Fund support to deal with the ongoing crisis and restructure its foreign loans after the government froze all external debt obligations on April 12, according to the Xinhua reports.

The IMF managing director committed help to Sri Lanka during these trying times, according to the prime minister's office.

Sri Lanka is currently experiencing one of its greatest economic crises, with a currency shortage causing a dearth of basic goods such as food, medication, and fuel.

Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has stated that friendly nations and  the IMF have been enlisted to help the country's economy get back on track.
