Sri Lanka's main Tamil National Alliance (TNA) party on Monday announced that it will support President Ranil Wickremesinghe's efforts to create an all-party national government to help the crisis-hit country to recover from the worst economic crisis.

Veteran Tamil political figure R Sampanthan told reporters that the formation of an all-party government is the appropriate course of action at this time and that his party will support it.

The formation of an all-party government would be appropriate, according to a different Tamil National Alliance (TNA) spokesman, to address Sri Lanka's economic and political issues. The TNA has not yet decided whether or not to fill Cabinet slots in such a government, nevertheless.

In a letter to the members of Parliament last week, President Wickremesinghe urged them to join him in forming a national all-party administration to address the island nation's economic difficulties.
"The government is currently working very hard to gradually bring the political and social unrest brought on by the economic crisis the nation is currently experiencing back to normal. Accordingly, initial plans are being made to provide economic stability, and beginning plans necessary to implement a methodical economic programme are being developed, according to Wickremesinghe's letter from Friday.

However, the main opposition Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) party insisted that parties and not individuals should be invited to form the all-party administration.

In the parliamentary vote on July 20 to choose the successor to the outgoing president Gotabaya Rajapaksa, TNA had formally backed Wickremesinghe's adversary Dullas Alahapperuma. However, it is believed  that at least a few of their 10 MPs supported Wickremesinghe in the covert vote against the party's position.
