Colombo: Amid the ongoing political and economic crisis in Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremesinghe was recently sworn in as the new President. On Wednesday, President Ranil Wickremesinghe also inaugurated the new session of Sri Lanka's Parliament. After this, the first session of Parliament will now be held. Meanwhile, President Wickremesinghe has also made a statement about India. "I especially thank India for its help in tackling the economic crisis in Sri Lanka.''

During this time, Wickremesinghe also praised PM Narendra Modi. The President said, "The Government of India, which is working under the leadership of PM Modi, has given us a new life. On behalf of the people of Sri Lanka and on my own behalf, I thank PM Modi, the Government of India and the people of India.'' Earlier, Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe had also made a statement about former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. Wickremesinghe had said that this was not the right time for his predecessor Gotabaya Rajapaksa to return to Sri Lanka as his presence here could trigger political tension in the country.

Rajapaksa had fled the country due to violent protests in Sri Lanka, which is facing the worst economic crisis in history, and then he also resigned from the presidency. Following his resignation, parliament elected Wickremesinghe as president on July 20. Wickremesinghe, a six-time Sri Lankan PM, was also appointed acting president after Rajapaksa fled the country.
