Stalin seeks Centre’s intervention on fishermen’s issue

Chennai: M.K. Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, has urged Union External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to raise the matter of Indian fishermen being detained and imprisoned by the Sri Lankan Navy with the Sri Lankan authorities.

The chief minister wrote on Tuesday night that the frequent arrests are causing hardships for the families of these fishermen, who rely on them for their livelihood.

Stalin was referring to the Sri Lankan Navy's detention of 21 Tamil Nadu and Puducherry fishermen in the early hours of Tuesday. Two of the fishermen's trawlers were also seized for allegedly breaching the International Marine Boundary Line (IMBL)

Salin ssaid that, the Sri Lankan Navy captured 68 Tamil Nadu fisherman in three different incidents in December 2021, and they were recently released following intense pressure, but they have yet to be deported to their home country. He claimed that the Sri Lankan Navy's routine arrests and harassment were causing panic and shock among Indian fishermen, whose families were in grave straits and poverty had overwhelmed them.
