Patna: The Modi government at the Center is continuously bringing back the ancient Indian idols that were smuggled from India and sold abroad. In this episode, the carved bronze statue of Buddha Shakyamuni or Bodhisattva at Nalanda, which was stolen from Bihar and taken to America, has now been returned to the Indian Consulate in America.

According to the report, this is the second time that the Buddha statue of Nalanda has been returned to India. Earlier in 2018, London returned one such statue. These statues were stolen from the museum in Nalanda, India. These were sold in Western countries in the early 1960s. The Nalanda Museum was looted on 22 August 1961 and March 1962. In 1961, 14 bronze sculptures were looted from here. A grand ceremony was organized in London on 15 August 2018 to return it to India. It was also praised by activists working to combat illegal smuggling of artefacts during that time.

Let us tell you that the statue of Buddha Shakyamuni, known as Bodhisattva Maitreya, is made of a mixed metal of gold and copper. Earlier this statue was kept in the Los Angeles County Museum (LCAME) in America due to insufficient evidence for this. S Vijayakumar of India Pride Project says that this case was a significant victory in the fight against illegal smuggling of archaeological remains through continuous collaboration with Homeland Security agencies and agents. This particular case has been going on since 1961, while the LACMA had been searching for evidence for it since the 1970s.
