While in school in Mumbai, Pillai was very interested in theatre but graduated in electronic engineering. She moved to London, where she joined the children's theatre.
She started acting in films in 1993 when she was offered a role in a French film Le Prex d'Nee's as her first role as well as a role in the English film Guru Inn Sevan.
Suchitra has worked in several films in Bollywood including Dil Chahta Hai (2001), Page 3 (2005), Laga Chunri Mein Dag (2007), and Fashion (2008).
In addition to roles in films, Suchitra is an indie pop and rock genre singer. She is also a skilled theatre artist.
