Sumitra Mahajan, one of the senior-most members of the Indian Parliament, celebrates her 78 birthday on April 12, 2021.
Interestingly, the official name of 78-year-old Mahajan, the eldest and senior-most among women Members of Parliament, in the 16th Lok Sabha MPs' list is also mentioned as "Sumitra Mahajan (Tai)"
Beginning her political life at the age of 39, Mahajan became the deputy mayor and subsequently a Member of Parliament from Indore in Madhya Pradesh. The post-Babri Masjid demolition elections of 1996 saw her win for the first time.
Notably, she has represented the Indore constituency of Madhya Pradesh since 1989. Mahajan has won eight consecutive elections in the Indore constituency in Madhya Pradesh. She served as a union minister for a spell in the Vajpayee administration. She is known for her association and support to several cultural organisations/forums promoting literary activities.

During 1984-85 she became Deputy Mayor, Municipal Corporation, Indore.
In 2014 she was re-elected to 16th Lok Sabha from Indore to serve her eight terms in the constituency. On 6 Jun. 2014, she was unanimously elected as Speaker, 16th Lok Sabha.
In 2016, She became the Chairperson of BRICS Parliamentary Forum for the year 2016, she organised the Meeting of BRICS Women Parliamentarians Forum in Jaipur and Meeting of Speakers and Presiding Officers of Parliaments of BRICS Parliamentary Forum in Geneva (Switzerland).
