London: British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will travel to the US on Sunday to meet with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and US President Joe Biden to finalise the terms of a submarine agreement to counter China.

On Monday, Britain will also release the Integrated Review, an update to its security, defence, and foreign policy that outlines how it will respond to an environment with growing threats. Russia invaded Ukraine since the last update in 2021, and tensions with China have gotten worse.

In an effort to counter China's expanding military presence in the Indo-Pacific, Britain, the US, and Australia announced the AUKUS (Australia-UK-US) plan in 2021; the meeting in San Diego on Monday is anticipated to decide the next steps for Australia to receive nuclear-powered submarines.

On Saturday, Sunak praised the AUKUS alliance and said that collaborations like these demonstrated Britain's strategy. The UK's international alliances are our biggest source of strength and security during tumultuous times, he said.

I'm going to the US to start the next phase of the AUKUS nuclear submarine programme, which is strengthening ties with our closest allies and bringing security, new technology, and economic benefits to our own country.

The United States and Britain agreed to give Australia the technology and capacity for nuclear-powered submarines under the initial AUKUS agreement, which was announced in 2021.

The agreement, which marks the first time the United States has shared its nuclear-propulsion technology with Britain since the 1950s, has been described as helping to boost the country's sluggish economic growth and create new jobs.
