Bhubaneswar: The Cabinet Appointments Committee (Union) has approved the Home Ministry's application to release IPS officer Sunil Bansal and reassign him to his parent cadre in Odisha. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) issued an authorising order yesterday.

Bansal, an IPS officer from the 1987 batch, is the subject of a home ministry petition for his premature repatriation. Bansal, who was named Odisha's DGP on December 15, will take office in January.

After the retirement of incumbent DGP Abhay on December 31, 2021. Bansal is expected to take over as CEO on January 1, 2022, for a two-year term. Since 2005, the 1987-batch officer has been on deputation to the Central Intelligence Bureau (IB) in New Delhi, where he is currently the Special Director.

Bansal had been on central deputation since 1994 and has handled a number of key positions in the government since then. Bureau of Intelligence (the wing that looks after the internal security of the country). Bansal held the position of additional SP Dhenkanal, Talcher, before going to the Centre.
