New Delhi: Amid speculation that the Bharatiya Janata Party will field Sunny Deol from Gurdaspur Lok Sabha seat in Punjab, the Bollywood actor on Saturday met BJP chief Amit Shah in New Delhi. The meeting comes as the party is yet to announce candidates for three seats in Punjab for the ongoing national election. Mr Shah met the actor to convince him to contest from Amritsar, sources said. No announcement has been made so far.
In Punjab, the BJP is contesting the Lok Sabha Elections 2019 with its ally Shiromani Akali Dal. Out of 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab, the BJP is fielding candidates in Gurdaspur, Amritsar, and Hoshiarpur. Sunny Deol, 62, is best known for his action hero roles in films like "Gadar: Ek Prem Katha", "Himmat", "Ghatak" and "Border". For Amritsar, the BJP had also contemplated the names of actor Poonam Dhillon and Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina.
The BJP had fielded Sunny Deol's father, actor Dharmendra, from Rajasthan's Bikaner in the 2004 Lok Sabha Election. Dharmendra had won at that time. However, he did not contest elections afterwards. Last week, the veteran actor campaigned for his wife, actor and BJP lawmaker Hema Malini, in Uttar Pradesh's Mathura. Punjab will vote in a single phase, on May 19, the last day of the seven-phased national election.
