BEIJING: As Typhoon Hinmanor, the strongest typhoon on record this year, lashed Taiwan and Korea on Sunday with strong winds and heavy rain, cities in eastern China suspended ferry services, and classes and flights in Japan were cancelled.

Ferry services were suspended in Shanghai, and more than 50,000 police officers were dispatched to help with rescue efforts and direct traffic from dangerous areas. According to Wenzhou's Eastern Business Center, all classes were canceled on Monday.

The Hong Kong Observatory predicted that Hinmannor will move slowly northward into the East China Sea with maximum sustained winds of 175 km/h (109 mph).

The island of Okinawa, which is located in southern Japan, has ordered evacuations and flight cancellations. The expected heavy rainfall of the storm could result in flooding of the Korean Peninsula.

On Sunday at 10 a.m. (0 2:00 g) China's National Meteorological Center issued a yellow thunderstorm warning and warned of heavy rain in northeast Zhejiang, Shanghai and Taiwan.

The Center advised against large gatherings both indoors and outdoors and directed ships to return to port to seek shelter from the wind.

Violent gale winds and heavy rain in Japan resulted in the suspension of more than 100 flights between Okinawa and neighboring islands, as well as parts of the main southern island of Kyushu.

Japan's national television network, NHK, broadcast footage of trees being violently shaken to the ground by storms and torrential rains. Ishigaki Island's common greenhouse was demolished.

According to media reports, two elderly people fell and suffered minor injuries on the main island of Okinawa.

In the southern region where heavy rain clouds have been trapped, officials warned that slow-moving thunderstorms could increase the risk of rain and flooding.

More than 600 people were shifted to shelters on Saturday due to heavy rain and strong winds in New Taipei, Taoyuan and Hsinchu counties, according to Taiwan's Central News Agency.

In Miaoli County, the typhoon started making landfall and uprooted nearly 100 roadside trees. More than 100 ferry services and about 40 flights were also canceled in Taiwan on Saturday.
